Let’s first decide what kind of password we are talking about — the password to protect the Excel worksheet from editing, or the password to open the file.

Excel file locked with password

1. How to Unprotect an Excel Sheet

The password for making changes to the Excel sheet is set by the owner of the document to prohibit other users from editing part of the document. What should you do if you forgot (lost) the password?

Fortunately, this password is removed by our algorithms in a matter of seconds. We make a reservation right away that we can only remove the owner’s password from the Excel document, but we cannot recover it. However, in the vast majority of cases, the client does not need anything else.

So, to remove owner protection from the Excel worksheet, go to the MS Excel Password Recovery page and upload the file to a special form. Voila, in a couple of seconds you will be given a button to download an unlocked Excel document. This will be a file with the same contents, but without owner protection for making changes.

It is not only very fast but also completely free!

2. How to Recover the Password for Opening a File (If You Forgot the Password)

The password to open an Excel document is a completely different degree of protection. This is a rather complicated process: according to the entered password, MS Office calculates a key and encrypts the entire document with a cryptographic algorithm corresponding to this key. Cryptographic resistance, in this case, means the following.

  • You cannot open a document without knowing the original password;
  • Passwords do not have collisions, which means you cannot open the document with a different password;
  • The presence of an encrypted document does not allow you to get the original password.

The good news is that people use passwords that are easy to remember in most cases, because of their habits and laziness. We have a huge database of real passwords (tens of billions at the moment), so with a high probability (more than 60%), we can recover the password to your Excel file.

Just go to the MS Excel Password Recovery page and follow the instructions. We recover weak passwords in a maximum of 2-3 minutes, and it’s free, you don’t even need to register on the site.

If Weak Password Recovery does not succeed, then the client is prompted to begin the process of recovering a strong password. In this case, to restore the original password, we use the power of our unique computing cluster specializing in tasks of this particular type. Recovering a strong password can take up to 24 hours, and if successful, it will cost you money, see the Prices page.

Please note that we start this work without prepayment, and invoice the client only if the password is successfully found. As proof and upon request, we can open your file and email you a fragment of the opened document.

After payment, you will receive the recovered password. If you need to remove this password from your document, then use the instructions below.
